And like Capote, he was a gay man whose drug use, promiscuity and sartorial excess could not mask his loneliness and despair. When he died in 1983 at age 71, the cause, according to the recently published Modern Library edition of his collected plays, "may have been the result of an overdose of Seconal or from asphyxia caused by choking on a plastic cap of the type used on bottles of nasal spray or eyedrops." Never mind that Williams had won two Pulitzer Prizes and written a shelf of American classics second only to Eugene O'Neill. The sad little boy had neither escaped the suffocating madness and decadence that enslaved him nor found the sort of masculine nurturing that might have comforted him.

Reputation on rise Though Williams spent his last 20 years trying to recapture the lost magic of his halycon days when he wrote "The Glass Menagerie" (1945), "A Streetcar Named Desire" (1947) and "Cat on a Hot Tin (1955) it appears that his reputation is again on the rise. Monday would have been his 90th birthday, and though no one planned it, Atlanta's playhouses are having a kind of accidental Tennessee-fest. At Marietta's Theatre in the Square is "A Streetcar Named Desire," starring Jessica Phelps West as Blanche DuBois. An AfricanAmerican version of "'The Glass Menagerie" is on at PushPush Theater, with Carol Mitchell-Leon as Amanda Wingfield. A vivid "Cat" just got its final per- ry.

And the Atlanta Shakespeare Company will stage "Streetcar" at the New American Shakespeare Tavern from May 10 through June 3. Top revivals "There's a kind of zeitgeist going on right now," says PushPush Artistic Director Tim Habeger, referring to the recent Broadway successes of forgotten masterpieces such as Edward Albee's "Tiny Alice," Eugene O'Neill's "The Iceman Cometh" and Williams' "Not About Nightingales." "'What is incredible is that things that were considered huge failures back then are actually some' of our top revivals right now." Habeger is among the school of young theatrical producers who believe that Williams' early and late works, some of them highly experimental, are ripe for exploration. He has already staged one festival of short Williams plays and would like to do more. The one-acts make sense, because the expense of hiring the big casts to do some of the larger earlier works can be daunting. "Nightingales," Williams' second play, would have languished in the vaults of the University of Texas had Vanessa Redgrave not gone there to sift it out.

In 1998, 60 years after Williams wrote it, the drama got its premiere on the London stage, then moved to Broadway, where it was nominated for several Tony Awards. Ben Brantley, chief theater critic of The New York Times, raved that a "feverish, full-strength compassion for people in cages makes 'Nightingales' fly toward the realm of pain and beauty that is the province of greatness." Williams based the script on a newspaper story about a group of inmates who suffocated in the AP file photo American playwright Tennessee Williams in his New York apartment in 1942 at age 31. steam room of a Pennsylvania prison, and it was that same image the outsider, the dispossessed, the misfit that was to become his great theme. Peggy Fox, the New Directions editor who has been overseeing the publication of Williams' work in recent years, attributes his literary longevity to that very passion: "I think he really just touches a chord of championing the person who is marginalized for whatever reason whether it's because he's an artist, a person who doesn't really want to abide by society's rules or has sexual problems of one kind or another. My personal theory is that no matter how successful you are, secretly everyone thinks he is marginalized, so they identify." OK not to be 'normal' It couldn't have hurt that stars such as Marlon Brando, Elizabeth Taylor, Vivien Leigh and Montgomery Clift became the stage and screen vehicles for Williams' seething postwar melodramas.

Such incandescent characters as Blanche, Stanley, Maggie and Brick became branded on the national psyche with the deftness of a white-hot iron and made us think that perhaps it was OK to Slick looks back on '60s with few regrets She doesn't have a trace of Her threads are hardly be known, she's downbeautiful. The tabloid life makes for good entertainment. But the only thing that mattered to this playwright were those authentic moments when the curtain goes up, time slows down and art informs the soul with eternity. As he wrote in "'The Timeless World of a Play," the beautiful philosophical essay that introduces "'The Rose "About their lives people ought to remember that when they are finished, everything in them will be contained in a marvelous state of repose which is the same as that which they unconsciously admired in drama. "Maybe a psychiatrist would say that subconsciously I did. But I did drugs because I happen to like different forms of consciousness.

You know, feed your head." She's quoting her famous song, "White Rabbit," an anthem for her feel-good generation. "Feed your head meant just that. It meant feed your consciousness. It didn't mean do it every day and kill yourself. Everybody's always talking about the bad angle of drugs.

But the fact is, cheese gives you heart disease, clogged arteries, cancer. It can literally kill you, but people keep eating it. I'm more afraid of cheese than of Quaaludes." And in some twisted way, it's good to know that she may be 61, she may be off drugs, but Slick is still a 1960s rock star at heart. She's one of the pioneers who paved the way for everybody else. And it does seem like everybody in the world wants to be a rock star.

"Sure they do. For the same. reason I did. You get to have a lot of fun, it's cool music, you get to do whatever you want, you get paid really well, you get to travel and you get to a lot of neat people. What's wrong with that picture?" Twi-Lite Discount Price Mo-Fr(ex.
