These are not those dragons![list][*][b]Fern[/b] is one of my oldest dragons, but never once had direct ties to Viral Evolution; it was all secondhand, namely through Schism and Riviniana. Used to have a traveling companion in Apidae, who’s since been lost. More recently, Mallow helped Fern reconnect with Apidae(’s spirit? it’s vague, at least to memory). Fern has always been a courier/messenger of sorts, and I imagine her friendship with Mallow has added an extra something to exactly what she delivers.[*][b]Notturno[/b] is a traveling merchant, and also an oldie—although I keep forgetting that because of hibden shuffling kicking her off the page, ehehe. lore designation: dragons by location
[edit: is later.]
Covers currently-hibernating crew only, with a sporadic shout-out for the lair lizards I actually have lore for.
somewhere in the Scarred Wasteland
Some of my oldest dragons, and those most likely to linger in the area.
- Maelstrom is never leaving this territory. Hates change, this guy.
- Lapilli has taken at least one notable dive into the Tangled Wood, but generally sticks close to Maelstrom. She’ll be taking a dip into the Wyrmwound for ???reasons later this month; curiosity about the exalted reaching its natural conclusion, maybe? Don’t worry, it’ll be quick; she’ll just come out different :)
- Schism sees the aforementioned two fairly often, and is good pals with Fern (below) when the latter is in this area. Schism and the progens are effectively all who remain of Viral Evolution, my first clan (long since dissolved) and who stay in Plague territory!
- Pestilence, meanwhile, never quite fit in with VE, but isn’t a firm part of the Inn, either. He’s around in a digout somewhere, experimenting endlessly.
Hibiscus Inn & affiliates
There’s a whole lore saga about this; the TL;DR of it is that CabochonLuster (the veilspun) wanted to found a hotel in the Plaguelands, found a spot by the shore of the Sea, and it stopped being an active in-and-out hotel a long time ago but some stragglers have made a permanent home here. Lots of other dragons have ties to this place one way or another, but live elsewhere.
- Cabo and Axius are mates; Zachariah is their adoptive son. Most if not all their lore is buried in this thread!
- Koirin is the one staff member who’s stuck around—at least between familiar-rounding expeditions.
- Asclepius mostly works alone, but helps Pestilence out from time to time. Science!
- Novak and Layes live nearby, not within, but are honorarily here anyway. They’re unwitting uncle-/aunt-figures to these kids:
- Ascher, Scylla, and Bokeh aren’t nestmates by blood, but they’re effectively siblings at this point. Freeloaders, the lot of ’em, but at least Ascher sweeps the floors.
- Alcho is Ascher’s -waves vaguely- spawn, a few generations down. Kind of just A Presence. I never thought about this but I’d imagine this one and Zachariah get along…
The remaining banescales (Andante, Vivace, Glissando, Contralto, and Staccato) also may or may not live here. Idk what to do with them, but I think last I checked in with their lore, they were tired of traveling.
- Andante and Vivace are would-be “clan” founders, but this nomadic little commune happened instead. They were never really an established Duo quite like Maelstrom and Lapilli, and have a more sibling-like dynamic than a partnership, but they stick together regardless.
- Glissando and Contralto are like… mlm/wlw solidarity. Both their former mates (respectively Trill & Chromatic) have since found new homes, which they’re sad about, but they have each other…?
- Staccato has always Just Vibed and done his tattoo/gene-change thing. Possibly works with the mad scientists on occasion. Also had a would-be partner/rival who’s since moved on (Reprise), but Staccato’s not fussed about it.
The only reason these two are here and not the “??? idk lol” section is because I know I had Raizel down as Caspian’s girlfriend (or at least fling) at one point, and Tatterbone relishes in the Plaguesthetic. It doesn’t not track for them to be in the area, even if mother and daughter don’t live together.
- Raizel’s lore has always been “haughty bartender.” I have never specified where this strawberry-daiquiri-serving bar is. Caspian has waitressing experience, but Raizel was never fit for sea legs; meanwhile, she has the ego in common with Drosera. Jury’s still out on whether and where she’ll ever star in her very own Hallmark lesbian romance special.
- Tatterbone exists because I did a one-off breed with a friend’s dragon, and by sheer luck got a primal out of it. Regardless of where her mom is, this kid is definitely in the Plaguelands to stay.
seafarers
Sailing ’round the Sea of a Thousand Currents.
- Caspian used to work at the Hibiscus Inn, but it was only ever a pit stop.
- Marlowe has but a crumb of lore, but that crumb says he’s related to Caspian’s endeavors somehow. Unsure if he stays on land or actually stretches his sea legs sometimes, but there’s some affiliation.
- Soleil and Squid, meanwhile, actually straight-up live in the water. Soleil will get a breed change one of these days; Squid just… spawned there!
across the sea: labyrinthian shadows
The subtitle is an attempt to combine the Viridian Labyrinth (Nature) with the Tangled Wood (Shadow), even though only two of these guys have actual connections to both.
- Drosera had a brief and life-changing visit in Viral Evolution, the culminating result of which was that those green goggles got like… permanently molded to her face. Horrifying! I had a brief lore thing about her being enraptured by a skydancer spirit, but that dragon didn’t stick so Drosera’s just ????? lost in the brambles ig. Sorry, girl. Might have an obelisk makeover eventually.
- Amaranta lives in a swamp between the territories, a mildly cursed place where dragons go and famously do not return. It was lonely for a loooonng while, until:
- Mallow, who was around the Inn when it was established but had their own life and toils. (Again, most of this guy’s lore is in this very thread.) Had a brief encounter with one of the ’locke crews, iirc. But mainly, Mallow’s settled in with Amaranta; Mallow can commune with long-lost spirits, and has used this ability to assuage the those who remain.
travelers: homeless on purpose
I have a lot of lore dragons with no particular home location, which is more a byproduct of letting their stories trail off than anything intentional. These are not those dragons!
- Fern is one of my oldest dragons, but never once had direct ties to Viral Evolution; it was all secondhand, namely through Schism and Riviniana. Used to have a traveling companion in Apidae, who’s since been lost. More recently, Mallow helped Fern reconnect with Apidae(’s spirit? it’s vague, at least to memory). Fern has always been a courier/messenger of sorts, and I imagine her friendship with Mallow has added an extra something to exactly what she delivers.
- Notturno is a traveling merchant, and also an oldie—although I keep forgetting that because of hibden shuffling kicking her off the page, ehehe. Anyway, she flies around, steals things, sells things.
- Cygnus’ lore never got super defined, but she was with Notturno as a ??jeweler for some time, then decided she was happier in baby mode. Psychologically, though, Cygnus is a full adult, and I’m just gonna say (for the sake of giving Cygnus somewhere) that they’re still together somehow. And yes, she is an Undertide on dry land; magic is a thing, she used to be a nocturne, it’s fine. It’s fiiiine.
- Jester sells absolute quack but markets it as a gift to Somnius. Ghost sells legitimate wares but makes it sound like one touch will kill you instantly. There are seeds of some long-standing rivalry here but I’ve yet to flesh it out. Jester is more likely to have a long-standing shop, but if he keeps being run out of town…
the Eldritch Bros(TM)
And of course, there’s these three. Koirin joined them for a time, and… honestly, probably splits their time between traveling with the second fam and the Inn? Anyway.
I’ve almost definitely covered them all here before, but since we’re doing this big recap-from-memory:
- Eavn is a storyteller. Jovial and not at all edgy. The mask doesn’t ever come off, no.
- Midst is full of mischief. This got him in some very very hot water way back when (lore from the previous clan), but life’s been leagues better since finding home with his bros.
- Kieran is the resident edgelord, in a pompous/insecure/kinda-emo sort of way. He’s been well-assured, though, that he’s got his bros even if he magically stops being special (read: the #000000-colored wings are changed someday).
- Koirin is getting a second mention here for the reason given above. And because they’re Midst’s distant relative. Midst has a lot of those.
elsewhere in Sornieth
There is no nice transition for this. These dragons, like Drosera in the Viridian Labyrinth, rarely if ever leave their designated territories.
Shifting Expanse
- Altostratus was my third ever dragon, and subsequently Seen Some Stuff. As a firsthand witness to many of my major lore endeavors pre-Inn, Alto’s travels have taken aer from Plague to Lightning to Plague again to Shadow to… Lightning again, probably? This was never super settled, but I think it’s ultimately where ae feels most at home.
- Riviniana and Gizmo live in the Golem Workshop. Gizmo was hatched and raised there (with some indirect help from Alto; they’ve probably reconnected but I never fleshed it out), while Rivi had a stint lost around the Plaguelands before settling in with Gizmo. As previously noted, Schism and Fern are pals with Rivi, and probably Gizmo by extension; otherwise, these two mostly keep to themselves. (I had some idea about them training new Workshop farmers in Contralto and her gf, but that… has not played out. The potential of Knowing Each Other is there, at least?)
Starwood Isles
- Solar is another one of Viral Evolution’s founders, but you’d never guess it; his lore has kept him mostly apart from The Toils; he’s long since moved back to the Arcane archipelago, and hasn’t looked back.
- Dmitri is an Arcane fanboy, despite being Light. He has very little lore, but that’s what’s there.
- Astro… if I had a nickel for each time I had an Arcane fanboy, I can take two. He’s still with his aether pals Icarus and Swordtail, wherever they may be, but for all intents and purposes, his spiritual home is in Arcane.
- XxCaptnPlasmatog (who does not have a short nickname in my head; maybe “Captn”?) isn’t a fanboy, per say, but I feel that for what lore he has, he’d end up in Arcane. As my Aether release hatch, he hails straight from the stars. It Just Works(TM).
Southern Icefield
- Carnation is my oldest dragon age-wise, and dedicates her cranky senior life to trawling the (location-not-breed-)tundra—primarily to keep an eye on this one recurring cult, Frostbite.
- Galena was hatched in that cult, and putting him here subsequently feels mean. I think I had him helping Carnation at some point, though; it’s better than being ambiguously lost, right…?
bro where are you
Dragons who are lost/M.I.A., for one reason or another.
plagueland stragglers
- Skiptrace was my second Mire flyer, and after training LethalTriplicate (the current
flyerfisher), lumbered off and… has not been heard from since. Had some vague allegiance to Plague as a byproduct of the job (even held some in-flight badges in his profile for a while!), but his lore was never super fleshed-out. He’s almost definitely getting scattered someday.... - Delphi was a rando who got sucked into Flight Reaping (that one time I did a lair purge by putting everyone on the fence through a Hunger Games simulator, won, briefly got possessed by an ex-Empress except that plot never went anywhere, developed some weird attachment to Galena, finally got somehow separated from Galena, and now ?????. It’s been a life. He’s getting Sandsurge’d eventually, probably.
haunted but hauntless
- Hestia ran a familiar-smuggling operation in the Southern Icefield, and somehow that brought her to a dead ghost banescale. Is possibly haunted by her sins in a very literal fashion? Details unclear.
- Holly is that dead ghost banescale. Hestia’s at “can’t live with her, can’t live without her” level with this kid.
gone but not forgotten
- MiamiTriggerfish founded the Inn along with Cabo (in fact, the place is named for Miami’s (former) token accessory), but it was always Cabo’s dream and Miami was sorta just… there. The grounded guy to the dreamer. Miami left and the Inn dwindled, and… that’s kinda been that? For now.
- Fissure worked briefly at the Inn as an in-house magician (a role since usurped by Zachariah), but left suddenly due to ???reasons which I have since forgotten. Fraud, maybe. Financial or otherwise. Has possibly reunited with Miami offscreen somewhere. Cabo mostly just wants to know if they’re, like, alive.
- Evergreen AKA InexplicableFern is a ’locke hatch! And then the ’locke ended/petered off. She had a wildclaw scry but I ended up liking the letter gimmick better, so the Nature affiliation is in solid limbo—as is whatever happened between her and Litho. I think she’s doing pretty darn well for herself, though, wherever she is.
loreless?
They look pretty.
- Seafoam had some lore rumblings, adjacent to Astraeus (Mallow’s now-gone ex-???something), but it was never fleshed out.
- Fred, for all intents and purposes, is a “no lore but looks pretty” guy, except Dmitri has a lore crumb and it only feels fair. Fred’s a reanimated ghost. That’s it, that’s all I got. (Tis the season to revisit that, though....)
loreless.
None lore with left lizard.
you just look neat
Effectively a G1 showoff.
:>
- Avi was the closest I ever had to a dragonsona, if only because I picked up the dragon and saw the right forum thread at the right time. In retrospect, what a time capsule of a dragon.
- Iko was never officially a me-related dragon, but I vaguely mentally associate Iko with like, art and creative endeavors and the like. So there’s that.
- [Name TBA] is my potential new ’sona-derg, except through a degree of separation in that it’s based on a… fan-sona-fella. If Avi is the former public persona, this (?not-even-)character is the flip between the current would-be persona and the less-publicly-amenable shadow. And That’s That!
also “:>” but to the left
- Rothide was one of my first fodder breeders. Talked about him a bit recently!
- dashcon was received with no context out of nowhere one day. Yeah.
- Disappointius was picked up with that name from the Interesting AH Dragons thread, trained, and then it turned out I liked him enough to keep/dress up/generally spoil. Also, he’s wearing an apparel piece that a friend gifted, so that’s neat.
dragons that put songs in my head
Amaranta sorrrrt of qualifies, but her lore prevails. These guys never had any, though. Songs in bios!
There’s no rhyme or reason as to why these songs/albums were chosen for fandragon-ing, except that I liked the tunes at the time, like the album art (or in Amaranta’s case, associated aesthetics from the music video), and managed to find good lizards for them. This is not something I do regularly, because my music tastes are wide and I would go insane. But if the timing aligns…!
Anyway, that took -checks watch- a little under 2 hours

There are some breeds I like far better as hatchlings than adults. Mirrors have become one such breed, I’ve noticed; Fathoms seem to be another.
or: I got an Imperial out of an Imperial/Mirorr nest, and colors be darned, that’s an instant Row promotion. This whole line is just weirdly lucky for me, I guess?? (I mean, out of one dragon and a hatch, but STILL.)
Anyway.

Keeping the drops grouped by venue for ease of recording, though:

Immediate addendum: I have made a mistake. An AH search for G1 triple-basic Dusthides up for treasure turned up a lad with Stonewash and Thistle, my progens’ primaries, a potentially-matchy tert, and Fire eyes—meaning I can drag the lore back to Tyson, the first G1 I ever hatched (and who I was just thinking would’ve been good for this project, if I still had him).
So uh, meet Archibald (I), liable to be renamed in the future, and probable keeper even if his lineage fails because -waves around vaguely-
…Guess I’m making an offshoot thread for this :V Maybe even bio badges… help…

Drafting the thread here because I can.
title: Breed Out the Bald in 100 Hatchlings or Less
A riff on the [Breed Out the Basic](LINK) & [100 Hatchling]() challenges,
but with a Dusthide line.
Meet Archibald.
Archibald has one goal: have a triple-gened, not-Common-eyed descendant who Archaeoraptor (that’s me!) wants to keep. If Archibald’s kin cannot do this before 100 or more hatchlings are produced, his lineage will be considered a failure, and the challenge will start over with a new founder.
In other words: I want that Ancient breeding achievement.
Mate contributions welcome; read on to learn how this works!
Da Rules
- As a matter of personal preference, I’m only spending treasure.
- Each founder must be a triple-basic G1. The founder can only be gened using profits raised directly from the challenge, and the geneing should be done all at once (if at all).
- Rather than one dragon having ≥100 hatchlings, I’m counting offspring cumulatively. They do not all need to find homes.
- Each dragon can only breed once. I am not paying attention to gene rarity, but mates that I buy (I’ll be less picky about player offerings) should be triple-gened.
- The heir of each generation can be chosen however I feel like at the time; personal discretion, RNG, Coli, or all or none of the above.
- Mates can be from other players (hi!), swap threads, the Auction House, wherever. I have no end goal; colors and genes can be anything.
- Because this uses consecutive generations, mates can be male or female! But they very much should be Dusthides.
- The challenge ends when either one of these conditions is met, whichever comes first:
- I hatch a dragon I want to keep exactly as-is, with no gene changes for the foreseeable future; OR
- 100 or more hatchlings are produced. The family is too big and collapses upon itself like a supernova, and I start over with a new founder.
Challenge Thus Far
I am tracking everything on [a spreadsheet](TBA), both for ease of calculation and to reduce image-load lag on this post.
[a mate and/or rehomed hatchling spotlight can go here!]
[obligatory extra saved post; future mates, split by M/F? lore, even??]
[pinglist]
Replies welcome!
+2 saves, 5 posts total (including initial). forrr mates, all offspring can have a Name Theme; the Heir will always be named Archibald[numeral], and the others are just… idk random words, I do like me a weird name. maybe have a “I’d like to offer a mate!” form, with a name theme bit included, so the owner has a say in it?
also because so much of this is probably going to be random, mates are first-come first-serve by gender. hell maybe I’ll add an M/F alternation clause, even if it necessitates multiple nests, just so it doesn’t end up stacked one way or the other....
++sheet shenanigans
- landing tab with stats at a glance; current founder, total generations, offspring, and mates
- The Data Chonk: dragon ID/name/linked name | gen [Archibald = A0; next A1, A2; new letter for new founder] | role (founder, mate, offspring (heir/reject/sold) | genes & colors | date acquired/cost | date left/payout | bbcode avatar/100px small
- nicer-looking sheet with each generation. Leftmost column counts automatically, next columns grab that number to pull from the main; automating this as much as possible is ideal! (Founder in a long row at the top, then each subsequent gen starts with the mate. Use conditional formatting to bold “Archibald” for the heirs.)
- If/when there are other founders, use separate tabs! [A]rchibald, [B)aldr, etc. (can we.. can we do a “bald” name gimmick. what’s good for C—)
- forum post log, which is mostly for me but maybe others will find it neat. Basically a Table of Contents but with more organization. (Could even finangle this to spit out a proper ToC list?)
